Millicom pledges $1 billion to expand Tigo Honduras network reach

Millicom has pledged to invest US$1 billion in Honduras over the next five years through its Tigo Honduras unit, as it looks to deepen its push into digital services and extend connectivity to more remote areas.

According to BNamericas, the commitment was outlined by Millicom CEO Marcelo Benitez following a meeting with the government, where he also revealed plans to deploy 127 new sites aimed at expanding mobile coverage to an additional 350,000 people.

The investment will be rolled out as part of an annual capex programme of between US$150 million and US$200 million into Tigo Honduras. The operator currently covers around 93% of the population, with general manager Santiago Benedit stating that 4G coverage is expected to reach 95% by the end of the year.

The latest pledge builds on Millicom’s existing footprint in the country. The operator has invested more than US$1.6 billion in Honduras over the past five years to expand coverage, modernise its networks, and strengthen its cloud and data centre infrastructure.
