The Russian WiMAX operator Yota has been granted bandwidth spectrum use in Peru by the Latin American country’s Ministry of Transport and Communications, following the operator’s winning bid for the $3.9 million contract.

Yota will deploy WiMAX services across the provinces of Lima, Callao and Trujillo using the 2668MHz-2692MHz band, while the rest of the country will use the 2668MHz-2690MHz bandwidth. The Russian operator was the only pre-qualified company to bid on spectrum.

As stipulated by the contract, Yota will deploy 9000 internet connections within the first year of operations, with a goal of 60,000 deployments by the fifth year of the contract. According to Yota, the total investment attracted in the initial five years of the contract will be $US 100 million.
